Come Apart and Rest a While

"Be still (cease striving and fretting and worrying) and know that I am God!" (Psalm 46:10). That is a great challenge for all of us in, as the old songwriter put it, “this world with troubles filled.”

When I think of “being still,” I am reminded of a time Jesus when Jesus and his disciples were in the midst of an effective ministry, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Come apart and rest a while!” (Mark 6:31). J. Vernon McGee was commenting on this verse and he said, “If you don’t come apart, you’ll come apart!” I love that quote! It is so true. If you don’t come apart you will come apart. If you don’t take a break, you will break.

We need to find a balance. There are times when we need to step away from the busyness of life. We need to come apart and rest in the Lord. If we don’t come apart to be alone with God, we will find ourselves flailing and falling apart. We need to carve out time to rest, relax, renew, recreate, and re-energize. We need to carve out time to spend time alone with God… enjoying His creation, listening to Him as He speaks through His Word, and talking with Him through prayer.

Personally, I like to find a special place to be alone with Him. It can be anywhere: an office, or a closet, or a room, or a chair, or a park, or a beach. I especially love to get out in the woods or up into the mountains; but that is not always possible! What is possible, is to carve out the time to intentionally spend time alone with God!

"Come apart and rest a while!" Find that quiet place, that place where you can spend time alone with God. It will refresh you, restore you, and re-energize you!
