Gaining a Heart of Wisdom
Wednesday, October 22, 2025 by Dr Harlan Betz

"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."  Psalm 90:12.

First, this means we do not take our tomorrows for granted.

Life is like a vapor; it appears for a little while and then it vanishes away. We have no guarantees of another day in our physical life. John Philips put it this way: "Every life has a built in time fuse. Every birth signals the beginning of a countdown which zeroes in on a forced exit from this life.”  Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is uncertain. Today is the only day we have to live for Christ and to make a difference in this world!

Second, this means that we do not allow urgent things to crowd out the important things.

We can spend hours scrolling through emails, looking at Facebook or Instagram, watching videos, browising the web, and following social media. Time is quickly consumed by trivial things. Critical matters get lost in the maize of the trivia.

Do time thieves pop up throughout your day? What are your time thieves? How can you retrieve that time? Urgent things demand our time; important things deserve our time. Let's give priority to the important things. I'll never forget the plaque that hung on a wall in my Grandma Lilian Bahr's home. It highlighted this critical thought: Only one life will soon be past; only what's done for Christ will last.

Third, this means we make the most of every opportunity!

We need to value each day (each moment) as a gift of God! Ralph Waldo Emerson was right on target when he wrote: "One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”  It is so easy to procrastinate and to say "one of these days I'm going to...". We need to value each day as a gift from God and we need to stop putting off those things God is calling us to do! My grandmother, Gram Betz, shared a poem with me that has constantly challenged me with regard to numbering my days:

I have only just a minute

just sixty seconds in it,

Forced upon me, can’t refuse it,

didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it

but it’s up to me to use it,

I must suffer if I lose it,

give account if I abuse it

It is only just a minute

but eternity is in it!
